Going through a layoff is never a pleasant experience. Shifting careers is hard enough as an informed decision, what more when the news is caused by factors beyond your control.

While you would want to resist unwelcome changes in your career by maintaining the status quo, you might end up shortchanging yourself in the long run. Plans are great for a sense of direction, but plans can change. In the course of your career, you will naturally go through turning points which will provide you with opportunities you may not have seemed possible before. If you yourself evolve over time, give your career a chance to do the same.
